Cathy Freeman Foundation announces name change to Community Spirit Foundation

30 June 2022: The Cathy Freeman Foundation today announces its name change to Community Spirit Foundation, marking the start of a new chapter for the organisation.

This transition follows Cathy Freeman stepping down from her position as Director in December 2021, following 15 years of service.

The name change to Community Spirit Foundation signifies the organisations presence within the community and acknowledges the strength and wisdom that lies within First Nations communities.

Professor Larissa Behrendt AO, Chair of Community Spirit Foundation said: “The name change is supported by Cathy Freeman, staff and the Board.

"We are excited about the evolution of the organisation and building on the important community work that has been our focus."

The Community Spirit Foundation programs will continue to take a holistic approach to education outcomes aligning with schools and community leaders to build on the innate strength within the community to develop the capability of young people.

Ms Behrendt said: “We are proud of the strong partnerships that we’ve built with community, Elders and school leaders. Our long-term partnerships in remote communities enable us to work together with the community, to navigate through the complexities required to create social change.

“And that is what Community Spirit is all about. Working together, we achieve great things.”

Community Spirit Foundation will continue Cathy Freeman Foundation’s dedication to create long-term, sustainable programs led by First Nations staff in Queensland, communities Palm Island and Woorabinda and in the Northern Territory, communities Galiwin’ku and Wurrumiyanga.

Cathy Freeman said: “I will forever stay connected to the people of Palm Island, Woorabinda, Galiwin’ku and Wurrumiyanga. Their wisdom and resilience are an inspiration.

“I thank these amazing communities for allowing me and the Foundation to be part of their journey.”

In addition to existing programs, over the coming years Community Spirit Foundation will look to evolve programs to support community needs and expand operations into additional First Nations remote communities in a sustainable and impactful way.

The organisation has built a strong legacy, one that will live on in communities for the next generation as Community Spirit Foundation.
